Allex Michael: "Unsure of whether it was my dyslexia or some other undiagnosed condition, I was unable to read an entire book throughout school. Not that I couldn't read. My mother began teaching me to read at the age of two and I read out loud very well. It's just that I lacked the attention span to read more than a few pages at once. So basically I scammed my way through school. Cliff notes, eavesdropping, selecting specific passages and ranting about them.

I dropped out of high school, primarily because I was failing math. However, this inability to read books would have caught up to me eventually. How ironic, since my life's goal was to become a published writer.

Subconsciously, this is likely why I started researching and writing articles about science and wildlife. You can't fake it when writing nonfiction. And to make sure I had my facts straight, I would offer a finished copy of the article to the scientist, professor or biologist whom I had interviewed. Looking back, it was almost like creating my own university education. Each interview and article like a miniature course."
